So we got a new puppy. "What the heck?!", you say. I totally agree with you.
A 2 dog and 2 cat family was definitely enough for our home. BUT, this poor puppy was discarded in the local mall parking lot by a lady who could no longer have a puppy in her apartment. We aren't going to go into all of the wrongs that that lady did by finding a stranger (my daughter) to take care of her puppy that she wasn't ready for. However, we ARE going to talk about what a person could do if they chose to have a puppy in an apartment.

| Sunny with all of his cuteness! |
Firstly, a good, stinking introduction to our new family member is definitely a requirement. Sunny is our new Puggle and what a doll. Happy and playful with the other dogs and of course, a huge and welcome handful! He looks great in T-shirts and is almost always finding a reason to stick his tongue out! I made him an AWESOME red, striped sweater out of the sleeve of my sock monkey footy pajamas...he is THAT little! But full of personality and lots of love to share and he is pretty darn quick at learning. We currently only have an accident or two per day. AND he can be pushed to be more of a "big dog" by following his mentors (Odie and Charlie) and some positive motivation from the humans. He can get up the stairs to the deck all on his own and if it's chilly outside (which it usually is in the later months in South Dakota) he will follow the older generation to sniff around and find some good potty spots in the yard. He's doing phenomenal!

| He is greatly loved! |
An obstacle that he and Odie will be confronted with in the near future is the dreaded apartment lifestyle! So, we are circling back to the original dilemma that brought him to us anyway. Sunny and Odie being my daughters pupper-duppers will be moving out with her when she flies from the nest here in the next couple of months. What is our strategy you say? Excellent question! We have decided to go to the "outdoors emulation" route! We are going to invest in the grass potty pad from amazon and get them to start using it regularly before they move onto their new home in the apartment of my daughter's choosing. The grassy potty training system is similar to a doggy litter box. It has a layer of turf, and a layer of plastic with antimicrobial dripping mesh so that all of the pee can find it's way into a drip tray. How neat is that?
If you think that you may need one too, check this one out from Amazon.
